The Cemetery as a Social Document
Geography 137,
Introduction:
As a result of this field activity, you will:
- prepare a detailed map of your study site in the Columbia Cemetery,
- analyze the data you gather from the gravestones in a spreadsheet program, and
- write a brief report (2-4 pages-typewritten) which summarizes your findings.
While each study will vary in content and emphasis, the following rules apply:
A. Basic Cemetery Report:
- Cemetery Name
- Plot Location (Use Plot Number and Subsection Descriptor)
- Number of grave sites in your plot. (Minimum number is 50.)
- Age (based upon death dates on stones) and size of plot (length/width)
- Information on grave markers and monuments. For monument types click HERE
styles and materials: commercial, generic, homecrafted, indigenous.
symbolization and inscriptions (other than basic data entry)
Unique shapes, sizes, designs and decorations
- Special monuments, signs, benches, statuary, etc.
- Structures: buildings, fences, gates, paths, roadways, etc.
- Fertility and Mortality: Use the data sheet handed out in class to collect birth and death dates
and other required information for graves in your plot.
Using the data collected, prepare a detailed analysis of the people buried in your plot.
Also prepare a histogram and population pyramid using the techniques demonstrated in class.
B. Cemetery/grave site Map (Scale 1:125)
Using Word2000 (or any graphic draw program) construct a detailed gravesite location map of
your study site. Use the spec's sheet to prepare your map.
Number each gravesite on the map and use this number in notes for recording relevant
data.
Your map should include physical features and structures such as large trees, shrubs,
newly-planted trees, flower beds, statuary, paths and roadways. Gather all of the necessary
information possible at the site. This may require
some time.

Your final project is DUE ON OCTOBER 30 and should include the following:
-
PRINTED MAP of cemetery with numbered gravesite locations marked.
Maps should include a separate legend page giving DIRECTION, SCALE, LOCATIONAL INFORMATION,
and ANY OTHER INFORMATION YOU FEEL APPROPRIATE. Final
Map should be computer generated. Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3
-
ROUGH FIELD MAP--Include your rough sketch field map in your final packet of material. The reason for including this
map is so I can double check your scale and calculations. Sample Rough Sketch Map
-
DATA LISTING-- Use the DATA Form to collect your data.
This information MUST be entered into excel. Print a copy of your data and include with your report.
-
REPORT (2-4 PAGES, double-spaced, typed, font size 10-14, margins not wider than 1.5 inches)
summarizing your map and data.
